| Soups, Stews & Chili | French Onion Soup (print) | Provided By: Kelly | Description: | Ingredients | 3lb white or yellow onions
1/2 stick of butter
2-3 tablespoons brown sugar
Approx 80 oz of Beef Broth ( I used the 48 oz box and the 32 oz box)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2-3 Large cloves of garlic, minced
1/2 cup dry cooking sherry
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1 small bay leaf (this is strong and easily overdone)
Loaf of French Bread
Block of Swiss Cheese
Block of Gruyere Cheese | Directions | In your Dutch oven melt butter and brown sugar, add onions and give a good stir to coat. Cover with lid and leave on medium to low heat for 30 minutes, until cooked and brown.
Add remaining ingredients, simmer about an hour, remove bay leaf and discard.
Slice French Bread into thick slices, lay on cookie sheet and drizzle olive oil. Bake in 300 degree oven about 10 minutes until toasted.
Grate Swiss and Gruyere cheese together.
Ladel soup into oven proof bowls, top with toasted bread and lots of cheese. Put under broiler until cheese is melted and oozy! | Notes | Gruyere Cheese is expensive $6-7 for a small block, but worth it! I found good deals at Walmart (in the specialty cheese by deli), Sams Club, and HEB.
